Thoughts to increase drive?

Putting this out there to see if converting to a quad might get me what I’m after.

I shaped this board as a better wave stubbie, but find that it lacks the drive/projection I was looking for. It goes very smooth but just feels as though there is something ever so slightly holding it back and I’m wondering if it’s the fins.

They are placed fairly far forward with the center box starting at 8” and the side bites at 18”. I’ve run both single fin and single with sides, both regular and bonzer sides. Currently running the DRD4 tudar egg single and bonzer sides.

I’m now considering dropping quad boxes in further back and seeing if having fins further back will give it that hair of speed I am feeling it want to achieve but can’t.

The bottom is a hull from nose to the fin area with a double concave shaped into the hull a little ahead mid to the fins. Flat past fins.

Thanks for thought!

I think your boxes are all way too far forward. For shorter 2+1s I set the long box at 5-6 and sidebites between 12-15 depending on the tail shape. Quad might work, but I think 18” is too far forward for that setup as well. Try running as a single with a slightly larger 8-9”fin towards the rear of the box before cutting any more holes in the board.
Also. I personally find that bonzer runners as sidebites to be really sluggish and give weird lift without the bonzer bottom setup.
Sometimes it’s just best to just build a new board- it might feel like it lacks drive because the rocker rails, foil, or bottom contours are a little off

Agreed on the box placements. That’s what I run in my pure hull and I love it so I tried it here…

Yeah if i tried quad I’d just drop 4 new boxes in the correct locations. At this point it’s all an experiment so I don’t mind having six boxes in it as this is a test board.

As you said - it could be foil etc… but I can see if it’s fins with new boxes and eliminate that before looking at other variables as I dial this one in

I may be wrong...but usually instant built in speed off the take off takes a wider tail...all my stubby board with big ass tails are instant go right off the bat...while the more pulled in tails are more hold and in the pocket kind of surfing

Fins are pretty far forward, if the tail is thick that could play a huge part.
Bonzer runners on a board not fully designed for them are going to hurt as well, especially if they have too much toe.

IMO a board that is designed to work as either a quad or a 2+1 isn’t going to do either as good as possible. It will be a compromise on either end….unless of course you have thousands of boards under you belt and have made endless versions…

I would try a long based fin with a pretty substantial amount of rake. If that doesn’t change it drastically either surf it for what it is or sell it and make another version.

Any of the shorter boards I make I try and keep my bottom contours super simple. It’s hard to screw up simple but really easy to screw up complicated. I don’t have the funds/experience/guidance to try and make things harder for myself than they need to be.

I'd try one of these 1st before doing fin boxes. A well placed Quad set up could develop a lot more drive if grouped right to position closer to rail than center.

Thanks Bruce!

That’s what I was wondering so thanks for confirming that!
