Agreed on MPE as a good cost-effective way to try a hull, and I recommend going longer so there's more room for error / improvisation. My first hull was 7', but the first one I loved was 9'2... and now my thirst for 7'10-8'4 hulls is unquenchable
I'll throw in a vote for the Liddle Designs Baby V. I had a 7'0 that worked well at my favorite reef and beach breaks. Wish I still owned it, would make a great travel board.
