Keen to hear what are folks’ ideal Indo/“islands” trip (ie reef breaks) and home 3 board quivers are. From boards I’ve ridden mine are:

Indo quiver:

7’7 Gato Heroi Speed Acid (single fin)
6’9 Ryan Lovelace FM (twinzer)
6’8 Neal Purchase Jnr 6’8 Snub (2+1)

Home (UK): As above but swap out the Gato Heroi with a longboard like a 9’6 Bexon Keeper or a fuller mid length like Lovelace Thick Lizzy (7’10-8ft)

Aspirationally, for the Indo trip, I’d like to swap out the Speed Acid with a MOTE massive or a Sveboda Billy Jean (each around 8ft) but not experienced either…

Posted thoughts on this in other threads but as of right now, my two most used boards at rincon and other SB points this past month is basically the same as what I took to the ments for a month this past summer...

5'9 CI twin pin (most surfed both places)

6'4 beamish channel bottom twin (step up)

IMO, length is not necessary or even preferable in Indo. Somewhere like the North Shore, yes, definitely.

For Indo not that I’ve ever been…

5’10” GH Diet Pill
6’3” …lost Round Up
I’d like to bring a keel fish but I’d probably find a bigger step up.

Home:

5’10” Michael Miller keel fosh
9’7” Wayne Rich Wildcard 1
10’ Wayne Rich Harmonic ‘67

I ride the fish in everything that has decent push. And I’ve really been enjoying longboarding a lot. The Wildcard is perfect for smaller summer surf and the Harmonic can handle more of a range of waves

I also ride a couple fishes (5'10 lis and 5'9 love machine currently) at home and brought the 5'9 to Indo. Really fun but I felt like the extra nose width was a hindrance some days.

Indo is a big place!

If I'm pitching up at Uluwatu in peak dry season, I would have something in the 7-8ft range from Jim Banks... Maybe a Hit the Road, alongside my 6'6 Simon Anderson Heritage and my 7ft C Bucket.

If it was different time of year, or maybe a trip somewhere else, the answer would vary again... North Sumatra would be more focused on a smaller wave range, for instance.

A lot of it is what you are comfortable with I think. I've seen a Peruvian dude own the place at macking Launching Pad/Speedies at Grajagan on a tiny little 5'8 Xanadu pintail when most folk were on big boards and salty old Aussies ruling Racetracks on browned Mini-mals.

As for home , also UK, , it changes all the time, but I've been riding a Bexon fish, a C Bucket and that Simon thruster this winter. Just picked up a 6'5 edgeboard so looking forward to feeling that out.

Thanks for your responses.... That sounds like you have a great mix. I think you are right. I've just got back from Northern Sumatra in off-season where waves were typically in 3-6ft range and more mellow... There were certainly smaller days where the surfers on longer boards were having the most fun but tbh there wasnt a day that a decent short boarder couldnt get his or her share. I am a pretty average surfer so felt I needed a bit more help getting in the waves so the 6'9 FM (c.42L) became my "go to". The Pyzel Phantom (40 L) I took with me only got wet once! How is the Bexon Fish? Been looking at the Mid Vish, Christenson Long Phish and Bexon (DTL have these) and curious as to how they fare in English waves? What size are you riding in that?

PS if I was a better surfer, I think a fish would be a great versatile option but not there yet...... A long fish like the Vouch Mid Vish or the Bexon could be a great option.

I hear you on length, particularly on hollower waves... How does the Beamish go?

Long fish go great anywhere they have room to breath, really. The range (in terms of size they can handle) is also a positive aspect.

However, I would not ride one if my local break was mostly short, broken up windswell or a sucky, hollow, twisty bowl of a wave.

Meant to add - my summer boards would change again and it would be doubtful I would ride the thruster.

I have a Squire 9'1 Egg a Matty Yeates mini V Bottom and a 7'6" Michael Cundith I would ride more I guess.
