Not to hijack the thread but I couldn’t agree more with @hardyw and you—this is a neat program they’re running but Pilgrim really bothers me. The markup on their boards is outrageous, and I can’t help but feel that they value the “supply” side of everything much, much more than the “surf” side. They’re more tolerable than Saturdays, in that regard, but still…
Saturdays is good for coffee and wax. If the barista is previously engaged in convo, I just get wax. Sometimes they have good boards. This was the best place to get a Fowler BITnotsodistantD.

Like they are selling $300 shirts made of flax seed and shit. It feels very pretentious to me and it definitely doesn't feel like it's truly about surfing and getting people stoked. Just my opinion.

Like when I go there compared to going to Beach House in bayhead is a totally different feel.
I get your point. When Chris had Mollusk it was a different vibe. Much more "surf shop". Their BBQ & projection parties were really fun. And then some people thought it was too cliquey. And some people wanted more "core" SB's stocked. Hard to make everyone happy and the shop can't be all things to all people... so like @jettyjawn wrote, he's not trying to make everyone happy... and he is still a genuine guy. I appreciate what Chris is doing and stop in from time to time. I don't always see him and that's a bummer BUT it's also understandable... and it's not all about me.

And yes, it's not the same as when Dutchie was behind the counter but that's OK. MM's commute to work is lot shorter now. Things change or they dont survive. I check out the boards and tend to buy shoes and t-shirts there. Someone with more liquidity could spend a lot more and that's great. It's unique in its refinement and Chris is always letting it morph... like with the Shaper's Residency.

(There's lots of other options within the 5 boros. Saturdays serves its purpose. Gucci used to have boards (not sure if they do now b/c I haven't been to their Billyburg shop) and their used board rack tended to be pretty good. Aegir has lots of pop outs and is a hybrid skate shop in a crazy high rent location (and they do decent ding repair). Breakers, Breakwater & Station in QNS get the job done. More shops in LB.)

(I've never been to Beach House but I've only heard good things.)

NOW... back on topic...

I'm on the list for a FA and I'm stoked (buy some of my used boards to make this purchase easier!!!!). I look fwd to getting a freshie from Tristan! So hard to choose!

I'm really not hating on Pilgrim. If anything their weirdness is kind of entertaining to me. In NYC the rent cost associated with running a brick and mortar likely forces some of these shops to diversify a bit rather than just running a surf only operation.

Beach House is great, last time I was in there the owner and I just shot the breeze about boards and fins for like a half hour. And he has a ton of used boards in there that are very affordable, which in the days of $2000 longboards represents accessibility to me and that's a vibe that I'm into

Right on. I'm right there with you with the used board industry.

and yeah. I talked to a favored shaper of mine about opening up a little garage shop of his boards... in my garage, by appt... and in 3 swift minutes he gave me a wake up call with ample anecdotes that boiled down to "don't do it, there's no $ in a surf shop that just has boards"

Oh and I updated my long response to be even longer. Hooty hooo!
