The context: apparently tenfooter was working in a hospital. saw some heavy shit. surfinfish said “freedom of choice” arguments are pathetic.

This is where "freedom of choice" got us, , , , a study to be released by Columbia U:

"We find significant reductions of the basic reproductive numbers in major metropolitan areas in association with social distancing and other control measures. Counterfactual simulations indicate that, had these same control measures been implemented just 1-2 weeks earlier, a substantial number of cases and deaths could have been averted. Specifically, nationwide, 61.6% [95% CI: 54.6%-67.7%] of reported infections and 55.0% [95% CI: 46.1%-62.2%] of reported deaths as of May 3, 2020 could have been avoided if the same control measures had been implemented just one week earlier. We also examine the effects of delays in re-implementing social distancing following a relaxation of control measures. A longer response time results in a stronger rebound of infections and death. Our findings underscore the importance of early intervention and aggressive response in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic."

Whenever the topic of handling the virus comes up I try to remind people that something like 300k plus flew to the US from China (not to mention the many thousands that went to other countries) spread out all over the country like an invasion of virus stealth bombs, while the WHO and the Chinese were withholding information, lying to the world, and buying up all the PPE they could find. The spread in the US was over before we knew it started. If the Chinese had been open and truthful in December when they knew it had human transmission, when they shut down inter-country travel but allowed international outgoing flights this all could have been mostly prevented throughout the world. By the time the world knew what was happening we were all screwed.

So, here are a couple of COVID19 rules that you might want to think about -

You can't attend an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, especially in a church, but you can go into a liquor store and buy all you can afford because they are considered essential.

You can go to a bar or restaurant and sit and drink with 5 of your friends at a table that is 8 feet away from the next table, but you can't go sit on the beach with anyone, even alone, even if you are 50 feet away from the closest person. Got to keep moving, dry sand is only to be crossed, not utuilzed.

You can fish at a lake or bay, but you can't fish in the surf because you aren't "exercising"

    Welcome to California.

Apparently the powers to be lack any common sense. Welcome to the world we currently live in.
