I noticed that my Yater Spoon* has a stress crack running in a perfectly straight line across the bottom of my board.  The crack is right below where the board changes thickness for the step deck, so I would imagine that it is cracking right where the board flexes.  Naturally, I'd like to have the crack sealed/fixed before I bring it back into the water.  Are there any particular repair procedures or special considerations to keep the step deck functional and flexible as intended?  Is this kind of crack pretty common and to be expected for step decks?

(*For the sake of those reading who don't know, the theory of the Spoon and step decks in general as I understand it: the nose is thinner than the rest of the board so that when you step forward to trim, the board will flex a bit to flatten the rocker and increase your speed.)

PS: Sorry I said step deck so many times.  Step deck.

I have a board similar in design to the Spoon and have the same type of crack in the same area. I assume your crack is just through the gloss coat as mine is.

I was told by the local ding repair guy that the crack is cosmetic only and not to worry about it. I went ahead anyway and placed a strip of 4 oz cloth on it.

I had the same exact issue on a step deck(Coop Hornet) and was told not to worry about it. It happened, I think, while at a ding repair shop or the session after I got it back. I freaked! I ended up putting 4oz and resin across the area and sanded it smooth. Stopped the progression of the cracks, board seemed the same and off I went. I suck at repair and I did it, I'm sure you or a buddy can as well.

Thanks guys.  Good to know that it probably won't affect anything.  I wasn't quite sure exactly how it would work out, so I thought I'd ask before doing anything or having anything done to it.  I've got some new boards that are in the rotation now, so it may be a while before I come back to the Spoon anyway.
