| Going on 11 weeks now... do I say or do anything? Or wait?

| How long did he tell you it would take him? If it is a couple of weeks late, I would let it go. More than that, I would call him.

| Is it overdue by 11 weeks? Three months is a not-uncommon length of time for a custom board, especially if a custom blank had to be ordered. However, if he promised it to you in 6 weeks and it's going on 12 weeks, then you certainly have reason to gripe. Last edited on Thu Jun 17th, 2010 10:58 pm by FirstPointEric

Check in with your shaper, see what is going on. Could be a blank issue, or something. I generally cut shapers slack, as long as they are responsive to my pestering (which usually starts a week or so past the high end of the estimate of time they gave me). Unfortunately, 20 years of surfing and ordering custom boards has really sharpened that pester-the-shaper-because-the-board-isn't-done ("PTSBTBID") reflex.
I'd say things go off the rails at two times the high-end estimate they give you. At that point it is probably okay to look elsewhere. Of course, that usually means having to start the wait all over again.

I have about 30 blanks in stock of all my different models pre cut.
I have one customer who's been waiting ohh 2.5 months for the one blank I do not have!! Sometimes the ball can be out of your court. You better believe his board will pass any other in the shop when I see it!

Ordered a board from a big name shaper in January and it's ready now. No big deal - damn fine board. I've waited longer - can't rush genius. But, by all means, check in with your shaper. At least he'll know you haven't forgotten about it.

How much did you give for a deposit?
11 weeks ain't nothing. Try 6 months. Two times. Yeah, kick me in the balls, I deserve it but I thought the first time was due to start up problems.
The thing is, he was pumping out potato chips in the mean time to pay his bills and let me slide. And I paid him in full up front both times to get a 10% discount.
He lost a customer and a friend and ended up losing his shop.

| I was told 6-8 weeks. It is now 11 weeks. I paid $200 down on the board. I don't know the guy that well, so pestering him would be sort of strange and perhaps out of place. And no, it is not Gene. However, my nosedevil was delivered on time when I got it and it is a damn fine piece of equipment.

| Don't pester too much. I've seen a receipt in a shop taped to a very nice board waiting for pick up with the words "no more customs" written on it. It can go both ways. I'd send a "tone free" email.

it always takes longer than they quote. when they estimate the time, double it, add 2 weeks and be pleasantly surprised if it comes early. 6-8 weeks means 14-18 weeks so you still have time.
worth the wait (as long as you have other boards to surf). if you don't like the duration, it will just be your last order with that shaper.

I would send him a note to check the progress ( does he have the blank? is it shaped and off to glass ? ) and go from there.
If you don't like the answer you get then suggest he refund your deposit and move on

I have only had 3 customs shaped and they all came in on time.
Gregg Hunt Custom - 4 1/2 weeks.
Bing Sliverspoon custom - 6 weeks.
Glyder noserider custom - 5 weeks.
My Bing lightweight off the rack from Icon's.
