Clearing out fins I am not using. Most of my boards have glassed fins now so these should go to someone who will use them. Shipping is included (Priority Mail - USPS jumped their rates big time). Most are in very good to excellent (and new) condition. Most have light surface scratches. Condition is noted.

9" True Ames California Classic. New, never surfed. $40 (Retails for $55 + tax/shipping)

9.25" Cheyne Horan Winged Keel (Star Fin). This is the one you get from Cheyne (if you can get one from him) not the other one he licensed. Costs about $70 to get one of these from Oz. New, never surfed. $55.

9.25" True Ames Noserider (fin has no model name on it but it matches their Noserider model on the website). New. $40.

9" Fibreglas Fin Co. (Probox Larry) FLEX. New. $35. Greenough4A plan shape.

8.25" Donald Takayama. Scuffed on tip, minor damage trailing edge. I think this is the center fin from an ITP, but certainly big enough for single fin use on a smaller board. $18.

9" Fins Unlimited John Oxnart Performance. A few scratches. Some duct tape to fit box. $32

Velzy Butterfly/V-fin. These are $125 + shipping on eBay. Can't get 'em anywhere else. some scraping on the leading edge of the right fin - barely there, really. Ridden a couple of times and a great fin, just don't have a board for it anymore. $100.

9" Fibreglas Fin Co. FLEX. An older version, a little more rake than the G4A. Well used. $16.

Gath Surf Helmet, Large (fits 22-7/8” - 23-1/4” sized head when measured around the forehead). Well used but all padding intact, chin strap solid and forehead neoprene solid. I have two (since I only have one noggin, this one's for sale). $40.

9.75" Greenough 4A. Well used but decent. $24. (I have two).

10.5" True Ames Heritage. Some leading edge scuffing. Overall very good condition. $45.

9" WAVESET Variset 1967 - 1969. Very good condition for this era. Very hard to find - I have two. There is not a replica of this one currently made. $95.

9.5" RFC El Gato. Used once, no longer have the board I bought it for. Surface scratches only. $55 ($80 on ebay)

Futures standard Quad set. $16.

Wow.  These are going like hotcakes.  The slow economy has not hurt second hand fin sales.

I don't want to ruin your mojo, but that is not a Waveset fin. It is a Fins Unlimited Vari-set fin. They both hail from the same time period. But two different fin systems, not interchangeable.

No ruination of mojo. I've contacted the buyer with the info to see if he still wants it. I appreciate the education. Little known fact, it seems! I have a 1967ish Oceanside Pat O'Hare that this fits. Good to know the fin system as I am considering trading or selling it, and that info will be important.

My 1968 Harbour SR has a real Waveset Variset - which is the adjustable insert that goes in the standard Waveset box. I have a replica fixed Waveset I can use in that for riding as the Waveset Variset is a fragile system.

Oh yeah, the Waveset Variable fins are delicate, especially the clear ones. Even when they were new, the fin would snap off at the base if you sneezed on it. The black glass-filled ones hold up pretty well. I have a couple of those I use on my riders.

The Fins Unlimited Vari-set was a much better system. The clear fins still get old and brittle, but when new, they were fairly durable. FWIW, the price you are asking for the Vari-set fin is Vari-reasonable!

What's the difference between a "licensed" and "unlicensed" Cheyne Horan fin?

As far as I know Cheyne and one other company produce these. Cheyne licensed the design to that company and they produce and sell it, giving him a percentage of the profits or some such other deal. This is how I understand it to be, but I could be wrong. The other company uses clear, colored Lexan. Both Cheyne and the other company are in Oz.

As far as I know there are no companies producing an unlicensed version. A few companies produce hybrids of the design - FCS, for one. I doubt Cheyne or Bill Lexcan (the other designer) get a penny from FCS. Could be wrong though.

On a side note, a similar looking fin (though very different in reality) is the Wavegrinder - their website says they use the NACA design. From my limited understanding of the NACA (from flying RC planes) is that it is used to create lift. Interesting in principle and because it is a leading edge shape that is a thick foil. In an rc trainer airplane, though, the NACA foil is called a NACA "droop" and points downward (droops) creating a concave under the leading edge of the wing. This can slow things down as it helps stabilize and provide float (or lift) for the plane - especially useful for slower landing and in general a more forgiving wing shape. It is used on trainers to make planes easier to handle - the droops are removed as the pilot improves. I should probably start another thread here on this fin to have a discussion as my engineering expertise is not so great.

I was lucky enough to be in Newport during the America's Cup that Ben Lexcen's revolutionary keel design was greatly responsible for giving the Aussies the win. The keel was shrouded every time they hoisted the boat from the water but on the morning after the final race, it was left off so everyone could see what they already knew it looked like. Myself and a few friends came up by inflatable dinghy and drove in right under the suspended boat/keel and we got to look at it, knock our knuckles against it, etc.

The biggest reason I have this surfboard version of the keel as a reminder of that fine visit to the East Coast that summer.

See what happens when I get too lazy to look something up?

It's a neat fin. some people think it doesn't work, but Cheyne sure seemed do well on it!

Nice story, BTW.

Hey All,

If you bought a fin, they all went out in the mail today. Look for 'em soon.

Thanks!
