So I finally got the email from Oak Foils this AM that my high perf 5 fin longboard is ready for pick up. The pics above were attached to the email, and you can imagine that I can hardly sit still in my chair at work now --- STOKED!!! I need to get out of here and pick up this bad boy!
I had given Wayne some basic guidance that I wanted a green board and sent him some pics that matched the color of the bottom. Other than that, I told him to pick the stringers and any other artistic choices and surprise me.
As always, Wayne took a ton of measurements of me, my other boards and suggested the 5 fin config for maximum versatility. Over the past few weeks, I've been riding my Oak Foils Bryd Pod almost exclusively getting more and more excited about the high perf -- and I'm so stoked it's finally here. I am hoping we pick up a bit more swell this weekend in the South Bay, but it seems unlikely. This AM was a bit backed off and nothing terribly good on the forecast -- but regardless, I'll have one heck of a sweet board to ride.
By the way, Wayne suggested that I ride the board as a daily driver with a quad set of Futures and play around with the center fin in juicier stuff -- maybe even as a 5 fin for maximum stability and drive. Pretty interesting.

OMG!!! That board came out amazing. The dual stringers look great.
All of Wayne's boards I've seen look top notch. Best work I've seen by such a versatile shaper. I'll be contacting him soon to build me a custom. Can you provide me his e-mail address? Last edited on Fri May 9th, 2008 07:13 pm by SoCalSoulSurfer

That is one sweet board! Oakfoils makes some out of sight boards. I saw an Oakfoil at Trestles that this guy was shreading on the waves. Very impressed with how well was riding.

LEAVE EARLY!!
You don't look too well,Maybe you should stay home tomorrow. (and maybe Mon.)
You don't want to spread anything.
Just use alot of sunblock.
They get suspicious if you come back with a tan.(but that's another story)

If I ever ordered a board that nice and it was ready, I don't think I would be able to stay at work. I would find some excuse to leave early. It would eat me up to look at the pictures. I think they would call me 'Hot Feet'.

I guess the key is how much you tell your co-workers or boss about a new board coming soon. It's hard to keep the surf life a sccret and stoke moments like picking up a new custom are even more difficult to keep under wraps.
twiz - I'm sure you're already on the road, maybe in the water. Have a good surf.

Just wanted to post a few quick thoughts here about the board following it's maiden voyage. We had knee to waist high sets at the beach today, with a fair amount of wind chop, so nothing too spectacular to get excited about. In fact, here's a pic from the surf report to give you an idea:

Anyway, it's always easy to get excited on a new board (after all, it's new... right?) so I tried to remain as unbiased and critical as possible during the session.
First off, the board clearly has a notably flatter rocker than the typical "high performance" ultra rockered boards. In some ways, I've grown to feel like the ultra rockers can be a bit of a crutch and almost encourage straight toward the beach drops (which admittedly have become a habit of mine). The rocker on the UFO requires a much more subtle glidey entry and some planning. I think overall, this forces you to be a smoother surfer in your positioning and posturing. In fact, nothing encourages smoother surfing then a few back to back pearl dives with the board coming up right behind you -- yup, that'll keep you moving in the right direction. Candidly, I need this encouragement -- as it's really easy to become a herky jerky surfer on the ultra rockered boards.
The quad config, as expected, has tons of drive -- in fact the board is blazingly fast and i was very confident zooming around sections and picking up speed. It's funny how speed can be confidence inspiring. Quite a few times, I caught myself digging rails and toppling over because the board felt so comfortable underfoot that I was trying to get as vertical as possible. This will happen... someday... but for now, I need a lot more time with this one under my feet.
More than anything though, I felt like the board bridged a really interesting gap between the stability that one would want in a board meant for noseriding and the drivey carvey goodness of a higher performance board. I felt confident with some limited cross stepping and very confident with the faster breaking close outs. I can tell already that this board is going to push my surfing, and I'm very encouraged by it. I kept thinking to myself, this board has a damn lot inside of it and I need to really spend some time to get it out.
More to follow....
