I am looking for a noserider. I currently have a Bing lightweight Pintail, 9'2", which is a great board when the waves have size. I also ride a 6'8" egg. I would like learn to nose ride am looking for the right board to learn on. I love my Bing, so the Silver Spoon seems like a great choice, however, at about a grand that's quite alot of cash to put out. I can get a used 9'6" NR 2 for under 700. The price of this seems good, the boards in good condition and since I'd only just be learning to nose ride, it seems wise not to over indulge. But then again is the NR 2 as good as the silver spoon? Looking for advice.

The answer to this may depend on where the Tak was glassed. That said, go with the Bing. I love my SS like it's my child.

You should be able to nose ride your pintail. Save the money for a trip and keep trying.

Never ridden the SS but but I LOVE my NR2. If the used one is in good shape, I'd say buy it. I've had several RC glassed, east coast Taks and they were beautiful glass jobs with no issues. The one's glassed at RC's shop usually have his little logo on the bottom. Here's my NR2...![]()

I have no experience with the NR2, but I've got lots of Bings (but no Silver Spoon..yet), and a few Taks. All of my Taks are east coast glassed and I have to admit the glassing is hit or miss. My Model T was glassed like a tank. My DT2, which I would imagine at the most has a double 6 oz. deck and more likely a 6/4 oz. deck, has hardly any pressure dings after being ridden hard all winter. My ITP, which I just sold to get another Bing, had tons of pressure dings after THREE surfs, and I would imagine that it is glassed equally as the DT2, if not heavier. Do you know the person selling the NR2? Do you know how much they rode it? If so and the deck still looks great then it probably has a good glass job. But you can't go wrong with a Bing either.

Deck dents tend to reflect more on the density of the foam rather than the quality of the glass jobs. Classic weight foam will dent much less than the lighter blanks usually used for more performance oriented boards. I have a board from 1966 that has virtually no heel dents and a "newish" HP board that looks all beat up when you take off the wax. Here's the board from '66 with only one heel dent....![]()

So, the only way to determine the glassing is to either see a Ricky Carol logo, or by weight? And if it is glassed light, does that mean it won't ride as well? Or will it just wear out sooner?

The NR2 is going to be glassed the same weight no matter. The lighter glass jobs mentioned above were on more performance oriented, 3 finned boards, which by nature are lighter. There're all made to DT's specs no matter who shapes and glasses them. Donald doesn't glass anyways, at least not for quite a few years. He has different glassers that do his shaped blanks. I say get the NR2 if it's in good shape. You probably don't want to be learning on a new board anyways and it's an excellent noserider.

I've heard the same thing about deck dents, but the majority of my boards are clark super-green or standard walkers, so the glassing schedule has to have something to do with it, since they are all essentially the same blank.

There's also a Bing Gold Standard on the SD Craigslist for the same price as the NR2. If you want the Bing, but don't want to spend over a grand, take a look at the Gold Standard.
