Curious to know what you all think is the fastest longboard...  I suspect it would be something with little to no rocker and flat nose without concave.

Tyler Wingnose? Phillips Blue Max?  Peck Penetrator?  Hynson Redfin?

I bet Roy will chime in.

Then after that VPC will post something about Roy being really hot.

Yeah, that was my first thought too.  But hopefully someone will take the question seriously.

The 9'6" Andreini Vaquero pin tail from a Diffenderfer template that I bought from Big Steve S in San Clemente was bloody fast. I was mowing people over who dropped in on me. I traded it for another Vaquero. Picture attached.

I've owned a number of Hynson's over the years that are extremely speedy.

I had a 9'6" Hobie custom Phil Edwards speed shape (from early 90's) that was so fast it defied logic.

Here's a Hynson Red Fin (that you pm'd me about, Whale). It doesn't have any concave at all.

Little or no rocker does not mean a surfboard will be "fast", on the contrary it mean the board has more surface contact. A well designed board has a main planing surface situated closer to center or aft of center. With the forward portion clear of the water, it reduces the wetted area, increasing speed

Do we agree that by "fast" we mean distance over time? Or do we mean the sensation of acceleration we qet from going slow to "fast". My flat pinched lbs feel faster in the latter sense but I'd bet I was going as "fast" as the pocket would allow. Maybe a better question is what lb seems to make more sections? There is little doubt in my mind that the "top-end" on a lined up and clean point would be "fastest" on my single to dbbl con caved (more surface area oddly) tri Magic. We did some comparisons at San Juanico a few years back. We had no way to accurately measure top end, but we could measure distance over time. On average, hulls won and hulls as we know have a lot of surface area. It was a dead heat with fishes actually. The fish gained speed with rider input, the hull on with less - by rider input I mean leq compression and extension. Larmo has been using Scorp as a Bonniville for years and his experiments led to the same conclusion I think. Skip makes sections on his 12' eagles and Fish-Simmons (flat rocker and con caved bottoms) that no other boards seem to match when he surfs and with little or no input. Low tide points shake out the haves and the have nots.
Ps, I'd bet a Pacific Bottle-nosed Dolphin (Terciops Truncatus qilli) has maybe what, 7, 8, 10 times the wetted surface of a surfboard. Hmmm, Dolphin Suits!

Jim,

Based on what you had to say, is there a board design of yours that is particularly faster, going down the line, than the others?
