I wonder if it’s also round trip / outbound from CA, and if so, will EC board prices suddenly drop $2-300?

    FYI
Just flew to Auckland from Honolulu with Hawaiian Airlines. Board bag was no charge.

My son flew from San Francisco direct to Auckland. One backpack and one 8 foot bag.
They dinged him 100 bucks each way. They said any second bag is a 100 bucks. United allows one free bag international.
I would have argued with them.
I hate United for many of reasons.

Be careful they all have different size requirements.
Some employees are not that informed of there policys.

Alot of airlines allow 2 free bags internationally.

Take a screenshot of whatever airlines you are flying with there board bag policcy. It ay help you.

    Good luck
