    What Driftwood said ^^^!

Madrid has a great 'foodies' market, which you can get amongst prior to bar-hopping and grazing some more tapas late into the night... Some great Gin bars in Madrid too ;-)

Even if you plan to stay in one spot on the coast, conditions change rapidly so a car is extremely useful. Water and air temps may be surprisingly chilly if you happen to be travelling down from France.

Unsurprisingly, there are a few surf shops in Mundaka and whilst it has been a long time since I was there, there were plenty of used boards about.... Also, whilst I've not seen the boards in person, I've heard good things about 'Peta Surfboards' if you are thinking custom.

fyi Wallako Surf shop in Bidart is now shut. But https://seasicksurf.com is open round the corner and has some demo boards as well as lots of interesting US shapers, Kegal, Stüssy, Tyler Warren, Mitzven etc.

I'd love to move down there but we seem to have decided to sever ties with the lovely folk of the Continent, asshats we are.

Spent a week in San Sebastian [Donostia in Basque] end of June this year, surfd 3 days in a row and hung out the rest of the time with friends drinking sangria and eating pintxos [tapas in Basque] and was not bored for one minute! First stayed at Pension Joakina http://www.pensionjoakina.com/ on the edge of the old town 5 min walking distance to Playa Zurriola, which is the surfing beach in San Sebastian. Later moved to Far Out Inn http://www.faroutinn.com/the-villa where we occupied the villa with a group of friends [you can also book a room separately in the B&B] for the rest of the time. Rented road bikes one day and rode to the French border and back over a grade 2 climb http://inrng.com/2016/07/roads-to-ride-jaizkibel/ with my triathalon buddy from college...did not see him until we stopped for lunch on the other side of Jaizkibel. We did not need a car our entire stay in San Sebastian as easy to get around the city walking, bicycling and by taxi. You do need a car if you want to check out other towns and surf breaks outside of San Sebastian. Zarautz https://www.surfer.com/features/the-vans-duct-tapes-spanish-slide/ is about an hour west by car. If you're into Game of Thrones, go to Zumaia and surf http://www.boardrap.com/game-of-thr...pot-itzurun-beach-basque-country-town-zumaia/ Bilbao is only an hour away by bus if you want to do a day trip.

Re. Surfboard rentals...I scoped out the shops near Playa Zurriola and ended up renting a 9'0 Stewart Colin McPhillips [pre-CMP polyu/e Clark blank] from Hawaii Donostia http://hawaiidonostia.com/ and it was the perfect board for Zurriola, which is a beach break much like we have in NJ except for the hyper tides that rise/fall 13ft+/-. Also, Hawaii Donostia has lockers in the basement, so I was able to change out of my wettie after surfing ready to go eat/drink. So the trick is finding the right tide to surf according to the swell conditions. During my 3 days surfing I was fortunate to surf good waves ranging from knee high to chest/head high. The wind is usually onshore or sideshore, almost never offshore so you want to plan your sessions when the wind is light.

Re. Wife/Lady...I was there with my wife alone the first 3 days, and she found plenty of diversions while I surfd...museums, cafes, shopping, beach, and she does not speak Spanish [I do].

Wow what a response - really appreciative of all the feedback as it is super helpful. I'll be printing this out and throwing in my bag as we leave Tuesday night.

So it sounds like our split between Bilbao/San Sebastian is cool. @Soul-glide - looks like you're saying no car?

If we're doing 2 days san sebastian, 3 days bilbao, it seems there isn't quick access to a surf break from the city center if we're staying there, and we may need a car. Any thoughts if there is a better route?

Didn't book air bnb's just yet, so we're flexible to stay near surf is necessary. Only thing is I'll be with my lady and will want to be in city come night time.

Referring to your 3 days in Bilbao? To me 1 full day in Bilbao is enough. Spent all of March in San Seb with a day in Bilbao. Can add to food recs if interested .what are you thinking of doing in Bilbao? To me San Seb had more spots I was interested in checking out. Getting around if without boards also check blahblahcar it's carpooling that is pretty easy to navigate . Could probably rent scooters from either to hit zarauts which when I was in town was always better surfing then on san seb

Thanks again for all the feedback and will send an update once back. This trip won't be 100% surfing as I'm going with my lady (will be actually proposing earlier in the trip). The choice of bilbao was based on reccommendation of a good friend who grew up in the area, a non surfer, for reasons of visiting museums etc.

We will be renting a car - spot we're staying at offers ability to rent a car direct from them and offers parking which is a huge plus. I think we'll be venturing out to all the beaches in between SB and Billbao during those three days, unless anyone strongly disagrees.
