Yea Lance, Coopers expression as he was looking over his shoulder at a 15' swell? was precious. The injuries McNamara suffered chasing big waves around the world was amazing. Man, is he going to be hurting if he reaches our age!

Yea, catastrophic injuries are the worse..bad enough the normal wear and tear

A well known orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Gary Fanton, who worked on me and other OB surfers, said we would all end up pretty hammered with what he termed 'traumatic arthritis' = the orthopedic damage accumulated after continual decades of getting after it in waves with consequences.

    and was he dead right...

So what's that from? Just paddling or getting ragdolled in more intense waves?

all comes down to how much and what you surf. Longboards in smaller waves few times a week, shouldn't be many issues. Couple hundred days a year for decades in heavy lineups, however, with lotta days on shallow reefs and in the 2x to 3x range = the occasional injury along with ongoing compression and tear damage to shoulders, neck, back, knees =joint socket erosion, bone spurs, cartilage tears, tendon and ligament damage...add in a few decades of snowboarding the steep and deep for those of us who had that passion as well = 2 x the accumulated damage.

For those who go that route, key is to have good repair surgeons, good PT's, work rigorously at injury recovery and religiously staying in shape... and above all keep active, keep surfing as much as you can and as long as you can...Tom/Dawnpatrol a damn good example... dealing with a serious back problem, he still makes 700 mile drives just so he can string some sessions together down south...

Guess the point of the ramble is this - either you're all in, or why not just go play golf..
